Bathing Your Yorkshire Terrier:

(Do not use human shampoo or conditioner on your Yorkie as the pH levels are to harsh for their coat and skin.)

Bath Supplies:

  • A large fluffy towel
  • Mineral oil to protect his eyes
  • Cotton balls to keep water out of your Yorkies ears and to clean the eyes
  • A quality tearless dog shampoo & conditioner
You want to make sure that at bath time the room is warm without any cold drafts. You will want to turn on the water and let it run until its warm. Put the cotton balls in your Yorkies ears, one drop of mineral oil in each eye. Thoroughly wet down your Yorkies coat with warm water start at the head by lifting it up so the water runs down to the back. Apply the shampoo to the back of your Yorkie & head, then gently massage the shampoo in. Let it stand for a few minutes and then rinse thoroughly. To rinse your Yorkie, spray the water from head to tail and again lift the head up and back to avoid getting water in the eyes and ears. Make sure you rinse under his tail and his tummy. It is important that you get out all the shampoo so rinse well.

To clean your Yorkies face, put a small amount of tearless shampoo in your hands, rub them together to form a lather and then use your fingers to carefully clean the hair around the eyes and muzzle. Then rinse being careful of the eyes. I recommend using a small pitcher filled with fresh warm water.

Remove any remaining eye mucous with a fine toothed flea comb.

Apply the conditioner according to directions, and rinse thoroughly using a spray nozzle or a pitcher.

After rinsing squeeze out the excess water from the coat and then wrap your Yorkie in a towel and squeeze the towel for a few minutes, so that the towel absorbs much of the water.

Now use the blow dryer, set the heat setting on low or medium. To avoid burning your Yorkie, keep the dryer moving over the entire body. Never let the dryer stop on an area as this can burn the skin. Begin drying the back areas first and work your way to the front, gently combing through the hair with your fingers. You can also use the Pin Brush and gently brush the hair as you dry. Do the face area last with the dryer on the low setting. Now to finish you will want to use a fine toothed comb to part the hair down the back and take out any remaining knots.
