Children
and The Yorkshire Terrier Puppy:
If you have
very young children, you must supervise them at all times when they
are with a Yorkie puppy. Children should not pick up a Yorkie puppy because they can easily wiggle out of their arms and fall to the floor. Also, they
also have sharp nails that can scratch a child causing them to drop the puppy. They
should only be allowed to sit and play with them on the floor. It would be a very good idea to limit puppy-children play sessions
to 15-30 minute periods, 2-3 times a day. Remember that Yorkie puppies
are delicate like babies. They need lots of careful handling and rest as they grow.
Here are some things you can teach the children:
- To brush and comb the Yorkie puppies coat.
- To feed the puppy.
- To take the puppy out to potty.
- To talk to the puppy in a soft voice.
- That puppies have sharp nails and teeth that can hurt.
- That loud noises can frighten a puppy.
If you have older children, it would be a great learning
experience for them to take obedience classes with the Yorkie puppy.
In the class they'll learn how to walk the puppy, how to use the sit & stay command and how to teach them tricks. It could be very enjoyable for both the child and the puppy. In fact, I strongly recommend the owner to do the same.
