Bringing
your new Yorkshire Terrier puppy home:
It is best
to bring your new Yorkshire Terrier puppy home when you will not be distracted
by visitors or guests. Many people think a good time
to get a puppy is when they're on vacation. Actually, it's
not a very good time because the puppy needs to acclimate to your normal daily routine as soon as possible. I recommend getting your
new puppy on a weekend.
Now that you’ve
arrived home after picking up your Yorkie puppy, the first
place you'll want to bring it is where you have chosen for it to go potty. When it goes potty, make sure you praise and reward him immediately.
Now, you'll want to place the crate inside the area you've chosen as his new home. Place a blanket in the bottom with a chew toy inside leaving the door open.
It would be a good idea to give the crate a name, such as "bed". He may be very curious and walk inside the crate or be a little afraid, so you'll need to give your puppy time to warm
up to it. When he does enter, praise and reward him while repeating the name of the crate.
This area is the area he will be restricted to for several
days.
Observe and interact with your Yorkie puppy while he's acclimating
to his new home. After your puppy has warmed up to the crate
and has entered and exited a few times, you may close the
door while he's inside. More than likely he will whine and/or paw at
the door. He may even start yelping. This is normal
but do not let him out. You will want to wait about 15 minutes
or so. If the yelping continues, open the door, pick him
up and take him directly outside to the area designated for
going potty. You'll want to keep saying "go potty" or "go pee pee" (pick
what works for you) until he goes. When he does, immediately reward and give praise.
